Silk Material Can Help With Allergies

Silk is excellent for those with sensitive skin, for example eczema or those who are allergic to something. An allergy is an adverse reaction to a substance, and it can be itchy skin, watery eyes, itchy eyes and possibly sneezing. Allergic reactions are caused by direct contact with a surface or substance, and these reactions are called allergic contact dermatitis. Although eczema is not an allergic reaction, it is a skin condition that can be distressing and uncomfortable, especially for small children. However there are ways of easing the itchiness and irritation of eczema and related conditions.

Eczema

Eczema, or dermatitis, can affect babies from birth and can continue into adulthood. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy, but in more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Research on children with acutely inflamed atopic eczema, has shown that after just one week the children wearing silk showed a significant improvement on those wearing cotton. There was reduced itching and there was healing of the affected areas.

Silk is better than cotton for eczema and sensitive skin sufferers, as it is derived from animal origin, (silk is manufactured by boiling the cocoon created by the mulberry silkworm Bombyx, which produces strong elastic fibres) rather than vegetable, as in cotton. Silk has long strands that can imitate human hair, and this provides a smooth, friction free garment which will not irritate the skin, even on the most active toddler.
Silk retains body heat efficiently, is strong, light, flexible, hard wearing and has a natural wicking action, drawing body moisture away from the body.

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection, where nerves in the skin are damaged by the infection, causing mild to severe pain. Sometimes, the pain of shingles lasts after the infection has gone away and the skin has healed, called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). For many patients with PHN, light touch or contact with heavy clothing or bed sheets causes pain, tactile allodynia, and wearing light silk clothing can help reduce the pain.

During radiotherapy and for a while afterwards, your skin may become very sensitive, and it can be advantageous to wear silk clothing.

If any of your family or friends suffer from a sensitive skin condition, recommend to them that they should wear silk clothing, as this is excellent next to the skin.
